School Shootings and Gun Control

After this past week's school shooting at NIU I have been thinking a lot about this issue of campus violence.  I think there are many causes to these situations and each case is unique but there has to be an answer to all situations.  Some people turn to psychiatric drugs as the blame others turn to the easy access to guns.  The media has been addressing a lot of these various factors.  On our very own campus this week we had a violent robbery.  Who is to say that we are safe on this campus?  It worries me that we do not spend more time and discussion devoted to this topic.  it is obviously becoming a large issue in our society.  What can be done?  What should be done?  I know we have been talking mainly in this class about the 1st amendment, but what about the second?  Are tighter gun laws the answer?  Just something I have been thinking about lately.  Let me know your thoughts.

This is a topic that, I think, affects everyone, especially as students. With many school shootings, numerous at colleges, there definitely has to be tighter gun control and safety regulations. I know that as these shootings become more and more common, I am kind of afraid of what is possible at a place where people are supposed to be safe. However, it is not just students now choosing to take this risk, but random people from different schools. My heart goes out to all those who have lost someone or who have been hurt in this sort of tragedy and hope that there will be something to help prevent these tragedies in the future.

I agree. A school is a place for education and safety. If we, as students, can not feel safe on our own campus, where can we? This is especially important to think about after CSUMB’s recent dorm robbery. Most of the time, parents send students to college to start their lives, and students move to dorms to experience life away from home. A dorm should be a safe stepping stone for young people to learn how to live on their own. Something needs to be done in order to keep student safety the main concern. It is frightening to think that instead of just worrying about writing essays and studying for finals, students must now fear for their safety and lives as a result of school shootings and violence. I think CSUMB has put forth some good efforts though; the otter alert system is a positive step for student safety.

I'm so glad you brought this issue up. Being a college student and hearing about this violence truly scares me. It breaks my heart what these campuses have gone through and my hope is that this kind of violence never travels to monterey. There is no worse feeling than not feeling safe on campus. High gun control and safety regulations would be a step, but noticing people's behavior and signs is a huge part of it too.
